in the fade

  1. Dear young people,
You never want to find yourself facing a dead end every single day at 8am, realizing maybe too late that you should be taking a different road, thinking what could I have done different?
You might find yourself in the despaired space of that dead end giving out advice you wish you were given.
So I give to you words I woud have wanted given to me.
Surround yourself with people who will encourage you, with people who will understand your hopes and dreams and want you to achieve them. Don’t waste time with people who want to hold you back or keep you from your goals, no matter what their reason.
Do now, not later. These are the years to you have to figure things out and if that means trying different things, then do it. Try everything. Chase your dream. Don’t settle. Not in work, not in friendship, not in love, not in life. Never do anything that makes you feel like you’re just settling.
Have fun, enjoy the hell out of your youth, but always keep in mind that the choices you make now are going to come into play later.
Treat yourself well.
Don’t sit around waiting for someone else to make you a priority. Make yourself your own priority.
Don’t be afraid to take the harder path. Keep moving forward. Don’t stagnate. Don’t waste your time. The older you get the harder those dreams are to catch.
Do something you love. Please, for the love of everything, do not settle into a job just because it pays the bills. Maybe that’s ok when you’re older and circumstances are different. But now? When you’re younh? Don’t do that. Don’t step into the quicksand of a meaningless, soulless job and sink. Go out there and be whatever it is you have been dreaming about since first grade. Try it, at least. You have time to waste right now. You have time to figure it out and get it right. You probably will not have that luxury later.
Life does get better. It gets easier. It gets happier. It gets real and it gets hard and it sucks so much sometimes and there’s nothing you can do about that but you can make it all easier to deal with if you follow my most important rule of life:
Surround yourself with good people. Don’t attach yourself to people who discourage or hold you down. A good way to waste 20 years of your life is to listen to people who tell you that you can’t.
Surround yourself with people who tell you that you can. And then do.
